2-ACRYLAMIDO 2-METHYLAPROPANE SULPHONIC ACID

Important Characteristics And Properties of ATBS Chemical

Posted on: August 4, 2021

ATBS (or AMPS) is a very versatile and unique alkyl acrylamide monomer that also has a sulfonic acid group attached to it. Polymers made with ATBS as a co-monomer are used in many applications like textiles, flocculants, dispersants, scale control agents and oil-field additives. ATBS can be easily polymerized with acrylic esters, acrylamide, acrylic acid and a host of other monomers.

What makes ATBS / AMPS a highly versatile product are the 3 functional groups in the molecule that give the product unique properties:

  1. Sulphonic acid group
  2. dimethyl group
  3. Acrylic functional group.

The Sulphonic Acid group offers the product hydrophilicity, cationic resistance that improves the dispersibility of the polymer. The dimethyl group in the ATBS molecule makes the polymer stable both – thermally and hydrolytically. The acrylic functional group in the molecule allows the monomer to polymerize easily with other comonomers.

The molecular formula for is C7H13NO4S. The product is available as an acid in the form of granules and also available as an aqueous solution as a sodium salt called NaATBS. (or ATBS Na). The aqueous solution is acidic, soluble in water but insoluble in acetone.

The unique properties provided by the functional groups enable polymer manufacturers to get superior quality polymers for use in a wide range of consumer and industrial products.

Vinati Organics offers the ATBS product in different grades depending on the desired viscosity and molecular weight in the end polymer.

Important Characteristics and Properties of ATBS monomer:

  • Purity(HPLC) >= 99.0%
  • Acid number: 265-275 mgKOH/g
  • Iron <=10 mg/kg
  • Water <=0.3%

The CAS Number of the ATBS chemical is 15214-89-8.

Some of the synonyms are 2-Acrylamido-2-Methylpropane Sulfonic Acid, 2-Acrylamido-2-Methylpropanesulfonic Acid, 2-Acrylamido-2-Methyl-1-Propane Sulfonic Acid and 2-Acryloylamino-2-Methylpropane-1-Sulfonic Acid.  ATBS chemical has an excellent synthesis, absorptivity, biological activity, surface activity, hydraulic stability and thermal stability.

Applications:

Today there are thousands of applications involving the use of ATBS in many areas including oil fields, construction chemicals, hydrogels for medical applications, personal care products, emulsion coatings, adhesives and rheology modifiers. They are suitable for use in co-polymerization and in addition reactions. The ATBS Monomer is widely used in water treatment. Acrylic fibre, oilfield, latex and adhesive. Emulsion coatings, personal care and medical care construction applications. ATBS Vinati chemical is widely used in the following applications:

Oil Field applications: Due to its unmatchable, thermal and hydraulic stability the ATBS chemical (in its granule as well as liquified form) is the oil field application. This is where hostile environments demand high-performing products. Its unique hydraulic nature, the tendency to increase viscosity, and its divalent cation stability make it an ideal solution for many oil field operations. The granular and liquid forms are used as scale inhibitors, friction reducers, non-retarding fluid loss control agents and water agents.

Latex and Adhesive applications: The ATBS Vinati chemicals are known to achieve exceptional latex stability in high-performance latex coatings. The dispersion of solids in the aqueous medium is colloidally stable which makes it an ideal choice for improving the preparations for high-solids emulsions. It improves the thermal and mechanical properties of adhesives and increases the adhesive strength of pressure-sensitive adhesive formulations. The lower molecular weight polymers containing ATBS Monomer are especially effective dispersants for highly-polar functions.
