Application

IB is a carbon branched olefin, obtained from petrochemicals or refinery manufacturing processes. The derivatives of isobutylene are some of the most widely used and industrially important intermediates.

  • Alkylation with butane produces isooctane, which is another fuel additive
  • It produces methacrolein, a cypermethrin used in agro industries and polymerisation of isobutylene produces butyl rubber (polyisobutylene)
  • Antioxidants such as butylatedhydroxytoluene (BHT), butylated_hydroxyanisole(BHA), 4-methoxyphenol (MEHQ) are produced by Friedel-Crafts alkylation of phenols
  • It is also used in perfumes and fragrance industry (p-tert butyl toluene)
