Methanol or Methyl Alcohol (CAS 67-56-1) is a colourless liquid, volatile in nature. Its molecular formula is CH3OH and it has a sweet and pungent odour. It is the simplest aliphatic alcohol, consisting of methyl and an alcohol group. This flammable liquid boils at 64.7° C and is miscible with water and ethanol. Methanol is also called ‘wood alcohol’ because it used to be primarily produced by the destructive distillation of wood. It is widely used as a solvent in various industries.
