    Introduction

2,4-Di-tert-butyl-phenol, CAS 96-76-4, is an organic chemical compound with structural formula 2,4-((CH3)3C)2C6H3OH. Popularly known as 2,4-DTBP, this product is a high volume intermediate known to possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory properties. 2,4-dTBP shows remarkable cytotoxicity insecticidal, nematicidal, antiviral, antifungal, phytotoxicity and antibacterial activities. The molecule has 2 tertiary butyl groups attached to the phenol molecule at ortho and para position.

    Uses and Applications

2,4-Dtbp and its derivatives are used commercially as UV stabilizers as well as antioxidants for hydrocarbon-based products varying from petrochemicals to plastics. It is a colourless solid alkylated phenol that is used to prevent gumming in aviation fuels. 2,4-Di-tert-butyl-phenol is also used in the synthesis of CGP-7930, probucol, and nicanartine.

The dominant use of 2,4 di-tert-butyl-phenol is as an intermediate to manufacture an antioxidant named Antioxidant 168. This antioxidant is one of the most widely used secondary antioxidants in all polyolefins/plastics. 2,4-DTBP is also used as an intermediate to make a light-protection agent for the stabilization of polymers. The product can also be used to manufacture some complex pharmaceutical APIs. 2,4-Dtbp is used to study its alkylation reaction with cinnamyl alcohol in the presence of substituted disordered hexagonal molecular silica catalysts.
