How is it manufactured?

The production of IBB involves the reaction of toluene with propylene in the presence of a sodium/potassium alloy (NaK2) catalyst. A mixture of IBB and NBB (n-butylene) is then produced with IBB predominating. This reaction is performed batch-wise using a mixture of fresh and recycled catalyst phases.

It is reasonable to assume that pure iso butyl benzene will be produced through this reaction as the unit operations for this process design do not differ greatly from current commercial practice.
