How is it manufactured?

The production of IBB involves the reaction of toluene with propylene in the presence of a sodium/potassium alloy (NaK2) catalyst. A mixture of IBB and NBB (n-butylene) is then produced with IBB predominating. This reaction is performed batch-wise using a mixture of fresh and recycled catalyst phases. The materials produced in the reaction can otherwise coat the catalyst and reduce its effectiveness.

It is reasonable to assume that pure iso butyl benzene will be produced through this reaction as the unit operations for this process design do not differ greatly from current commercial practice.

IBB is widely used as a basic raw material in the manufacture of various pharmaceutical and perfume products. Ibuprofen- an analgesic, anti-inflammatory, over the counter painkiller uses iso butyl benzene as one of the main ingredients. 4-isobutylacetophenone is an intermediate formed during the production of ibuprofen- is prepared by the acylation of isobutyl benzene 538-93-2.

It is used as an international standard for the study of enhanced pigmentation and floral scents levels in Pap1-transgenic petunia. IBB is often used as a speciality solvent and as a solid acid catalyst for the acylation of aromatic substances.
